How to tell if your export was cut

Open the export and look at the first message's date. If it's later than when the chat really began, the limit was hit. In Convobook the first and last dates and the message count are shown as soon as the file is opened.

Workarounds

• Export without media – raises the limit to 40,000 messages. Export once with media (for recent photos) and once without (for older text), then merge them.
• Merge exports made at different times – if you exported the same chat last year, combine it with today's export. Convobook merges several exports into one timeline and removes the overlapping messages.
• Export regularly for important chats.

Other export problems

• Export with media fails or produces a tiny file: free up storage, or export without media.
• Media files missing: media deleted from the phone or never downloaded can't be exported.
• “<Media omitted>” lines mean the export was made without media.
